Hello!
Welcome to my world of making money simple. I’m David Kim, the author of The Money Guide: The Missing Manual for Financial Recovery and the founder of Pathway Plus Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing financial education to underserved communities. With a passion for simplicity in money management, I’ve made it my mission to educate people to live a financially fit life, regardless of the stage of life they find themselves.
David Kim has navigated the complex worlds of technology, entrepreneurship, and finance throughout his career, experiencing both remarkable successes and challenging setbacks. His journey through corporate restructuring and market downturns at leading tech companies has provided him with invaluable insights into risk management and resource allocation. This blend of triumphs and challenges has shaped his unique perspective on building financial resilience and professional success.
As a seasoned consulting and technology professional, David has managed large-scale technology projects while simultaneously building a diverse portfolio of successful businesses, including ventures in real estate sales, restaurant management, consulting, and software development. His entrepreneurial spirit, combined with his corporate experience, offers readers a comprehensive view of both traditional and innovative approaches to business and finance
Complementing his practical experience, David holds several professional credentials, including an MBA and completion of the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) educational program. He is a licensed real estate professional in multiple states and holds AWS Solutions Architect certification, along with various certifications in technology, cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, and project management. He leverages this combination of real-world experience and professional expertise to advise individuals and businesses on strategic planning and navigating complex technological and financial landscapes. Beyond his professional endeavors, David finds joy in playing piano and guitar, cooking, and exploring new destinations through travel. These personal interests inform his holistic approach to life and success, which he shares through his writing and consulting work.
My professional path combines traditional expertise with lessons learned through personal experience—creating a unique perspective on financial management. After completing all coursework for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) program, I gained practical experience through real estate licensing in multiple states, where I helped clients navigate one of their largest financial decisions. My AWS Solutions Architect certification and additional certifications in technology, cloud computing, AI, and project management reflect my commitment to understanding how technology transforms financial landscapes.
What truly shapes my approach, however, isn’t found on any resume. My journey through military service taught me discipline and resource management under pressure. My experience building and losing a restaurant business provided painful but invaluable lessons about risk assessment and operational finance. The process of rebuilding after bankruptcy gave me firsthand understanding of credit systems, debt management, and the psychological aspects of financial recovery.
This combination of formal education and lived experience allows me to bridge worlds that rarely connect—bringing technical financial knowledge to those rebuilding after setbacks while helping high-earners understand the human elements of money management that textbooks rarely address.
My financial philosophy centers on balance rather than extremes. Throughout my journey, I’ve observed that most financial hardship stems not from lack of knowledge about specific concepts, but from disconnection between financial choices and personal values.
I believe that:
This perspective guides my approach whether I’m helping someone rebuild after bankruptcy, create a sustainable budget with variable income, or manage complex equity compensation. Rather than prescribing one-size-fits-all solutions, I focus on helping people develop systems that work with their unique circumstances while supporting their most important values and goals.
The Real Money Guide emerged from this philosophy—a resource that acknowledges financial management as both art and science, combining practical techniques with the wisdom to apply them effectively in real life.
I founded the Pathway Plus Foundation with a simple mission: to empower individuals from all backgrounds to achieve financial security through education, personalized guidance, and community support. Our work focuses particularly on those traditionally underserved by mainstream financial systems—veterans navigating civilian life, immigrants adapting to American financial structures, and individuals rebuilding after financial setbacks.
What makes our approach different is its foundation in lived experience. The same principles that helped me rebuild after bankruptcy now guide our educational programs. We believe financial education should be practical rather than theoretical, culturally responsive rather than one-size-fits-all, and delivered by people who understand both success and struggle firsthand.
Through workshops, one-on-one counseling, and community support groups, we’ve helped hundreds of individuals establish emergency savings, improve credit scores, reduce high-cost debt, and build sustainable financial habits. Each success story reinforces our commitment to creating financial stability that extends beyond individuals to strengthen entire communities.
My approach to financial education stems from a simple truth: theoretical knowledge means little without practical application. During my own financial rebuilding, I discovered that most financial advice assumes stability that many don’t have. It rarely addresses how to recover from major setbacks or navigate systems that weren’t designed for you.
I believe effective financial education must:
Whether working with a veteran transitioning to civilian life, an immigrant navigating unfamiliar financial systems, or someone rebuilding after financial hardship, I focus on building resilience alongside specific skills. Financial setbacks are rarely just about numbers—they affect identity, relationships, and future possibilities. True financial education must address both practical needs and these deeper dimensions.
Throughout my career spanning military service, corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, and personal financial challenges, I’ve developed a unique perspective on financial resilience. This isn’t just about recovering from setbacks—it’s about building systems that can withstand life’s inevitable challenges while supporting your core values and goals.
My work through both The Real Money Guide and the Pathway Plus Foundation focuses on helping people develop this resilience through:
True financial resilience isn’t about never making mistakes or facing difficulties—it’s about having the knowledge, tools, and support to recover and grow stronger. This philosophy informs everything from my one-on-one coaching to our foundation’s community workshops.
The numbers tell part of our story: participants in our programs have collectively improved credit scores by an average of 50+ points, established over $300,000 in emergency savings, and reduced high-cost debt by more than $500,000. But the real impact lies in the changed lives behind these statistics.
There’s the veteran who successfully transitioned from military allowances to civilian budgeting while building his first emergency fund. The immigrant family who moved from cash-only transactions to establishing U.S. credit and qualifying for their first home loan. The single parent who transformed financial anxiety into confidence through our workshops and peer support groups.
Through the Pathway Plus Foundation, we’re working to scale this impact through:
Every individual who achieves financial stability strengthens not just their own future, but their family’s prospects and their community’s resilience.
